SOUTH MADAGASCAR CYCLING TOUR

The South of Madagascar is a world of contrasts, and the bicycle is the best way to feel each transition. On a bike, you sense the cool air of the high plateaus, the scent of forests, the heat rising from the red earth, and the quiet rhythm of life along the RN7. You see artisans carving zebu horns, farmers working rice terraces, shepherds guiding their cattle, and children waving with shy smiles—moments you would simply pass by from inside a vehicle. Step by step, we connected our favorite hidden detours, panoramic viewpoints, peaceful countryside roads, and cultural encounters into a multi-faced adventure that tells the full story of Madagascar’s south.

VONJY & ARSON

This tour was shaped on the road, over long days of pedaling through the ever-changing landscapes of Madagascar’s most iconic route. Under the highland sun, the cool morning mist, and the warm southern winds, every viewpoint, every plateau, every friendly greeting from a roadside village helped build the journey you are about to experience.

As professional tour leaders, our mission is to transform this passion into a safe, well-organized, rewarding experience. We know each uphill section, each descent, each rough patch, and each smooth stretch of tarmac because we have ridden them time and time again. We prepare the daily stages, collaborate with reliable local partners, and coordinate all logistics, allowing you to focus on the pure pleasure of riding, exploring, and connecting.

This tour is our way of sharing what makes the RN7 so special: its breathtaking diversity, the freedom of traveling slowly on two wheels, and the profound human connections that unfold when the landscape, the people, and the journey come together.

OVERVIEW

This cycling expedition along Madagascar’s legendary RN7 is one of the most diverse and breathtaking journeys the island has to offer.

Scenic highland rides around Lac Hôtel reveal endless rice fields, traditional villages, and postcard-perfect countryside.

Further south, the landscape transforms into the dramatic granite peaks of Ambalavao and the stunning Tsaranoro Valley, one of Madagascar’s most iconic panoramas. The adventure continues toward Ranohira and the spectacular rock formations of Isalo, before descending into the warm, sunny south.

FAQ
How fit do I need to be for this tour ?

This tour requires a good level of general fitness, as the terrain is varied and often challenging. You will ride on a mix of dirt roads, paved sections, rainforest trails, and muddy or wet areas. Some stages include steady climbs and downhill stretches, especially in the Highlands and evergreen regions.

To fully enjoy the experience, riders should train before the tour. A good preparation level is being able to cycle 30 to 50 km at least three times per week, ideally on mixed surfaces such as gravel, dirt, and hilly terrain.

The fitter and more accustomed you are to off-road riding, the more comfortable and enjoyable your adventure will be. If you need help preparing, we are happy to offer guidance or a simple training plan.

We will be cycling on entry-level Trek Marlin mountain bikes, perfectly suited for the terrain and conditions in Madagascar. These hardtail bikes are equipped with RockShox 100mm front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano 2×10 gearing, offering a reliable and comfortable ride across mixed surfaces.

Before your arrival, we will ask for your height to match you with the correct frame size. When you arrive, the bike will be fully fitted to you, and it will remain your personal bike for the entire tour.

You are welcome to bring your own saddle and pedals to be installed on the bike, and you may also bring your own handlebar grips for added comfort. We also carry all the necessary spare parts to ensure your bike stays in optimal riding condition at every stage of the journey.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the restaurant of the hotel where we stay each night, featuring a mix of Malagasy and international dishes. Lunches are usually taken along the route—a prepared picnic-style. Whenever possible, we buy lunch ingredients from local mini-markets to support community development.

You can also enjoy a variety of tropical fruits along the way, depending on the season. Some, like bananas, are available all year round, offering fresh energy throughout your ride. Snacks and drinking water are provided daily to keep you energized during the journey

  • We provide an assistance vehicle on all sections that use national or main roads. The vehicle follows the group to offer quick help, carry water and snacks, and provide a safe option if a rider is tired or has a mechanical problem.
  • On off‑road sections (trails, tracks, or paths where vehicles cannot drive), the assistance vehicle does not follow the group. In these areas, the guide carries basic repair tools and first‑aid supplies, and the route is chosen with safety in mind.
  • When the route returns to accessible roads, the assistance vehicle can meet the group again at planned points for rest, support, or pick‑up if needed
  • Yes, all guests are strongly recommended (and in some cases required) to have their own travel insurance that covers medical expenses, personal accident, and emergency evacuation for cycling activities. Check that “cycling” or “adventure sports” are included in your policy
